J &L Underground Animal Rescue Strikes Again!

Animal #7 has been taken from the streets of San Antonio and rehomed in Austin. Her name is Juicy and she is a fuzzy-wuzzy doll. Next one up? A black lab named Sara needs a new home too. She will be #8. Woosh! Donations can be made to Animal Trustees of Austin, or to Jenny Wilson's Tooth Fund.

Chocolate Cake, Cookies, and a Caprese Salad

Working food...because I am at a coffee house working...

Jenny Update: Spring Break is moving onward, leaving me having to re-adjust and re-situate for the rest of the semester. This next bit of the semester has some fun planned. It is AERA convention in Denver and Reading Retreat to Port Aransas for the sand festival. Im looking forward t both. I have placed my house for sale with a real estate investor, which is a bit scary but gets me out of it with the payments being made. I'm still not sure what the next year will hold. I might be here one more year in order to pay off bills, or be teaching in Austin, or New York, or a vagrant. Who knows? But life moves on, with or without us, right? I went to Austin last Saturday and Sunday and shopped with Diane. I got a couple cute tops and a darling dress. It is so nice to walk in and have any size 16 fit-just some look better than others, and its not about something being too tight. Platform shoes are back in and sundresses are everywhere, so it will be a good summer for me if I want new clothes. Logan and Karen came in from Houston on Monday and Tuesday and we visited Shamu and the sea lions. Anita, Drea, and Thomas joined us. It was darling to see Logan (age 5) looking up to, hugging, and enjoying having another Hispanic boy (age 11) to look up to. We also visited the Witte Museum to see the dinosaurs. Such fun! Loretta is here in SA for the week in attempts to escape SXSW in Austin, so she cooks, feeds and walks my dogs, and is good at just hanging out with or without me. I adore having her around and miss having this like I did when I lived next door. I am having back issues currently which might derail a trip home to Dallas over Spring Break, but I am trying to remain optimistic (sorry mom). Thinking about the traffic on Sunday while coming home makes me wince. Maybe in a week or so.

Pupdate: Mitzie is doing okay. She is very skinny, but still plays ball and walks on her walks. She still has the occasional puppy look and ball play too. She is my little lovey girl, that's for sure. She has tests again next month. I get happy to think there will be another month. Zoey is nuts and continues to be my love monkey. She sits on the back of a chair and guards the house from all the kitty and squirrel predators that want to take it from her. Cita is loud and obnoxious. She is also in a state on constant shed. The furminator is about to hit the deck running.

So, there you have it. Love to you all, from us all.

6th Animal Rescued from the Streets of San Antonio

Over the last couple of years, I have saved 7 animals from the streets of San Antonio. and that's not including Carmencita, MitzieMouse, and Willow who were also my adopted babies from other homes. As for the San Antonio luckies: My mom kept Lilly (a white pitbull bischon mix), Salt, (a white cat who went to Loretta's hair dresser), Zoey (a schnoodle who stayed with me), KiKi (a black tortie cat) whom Loretta kept, Teddy (a red/golden sir-mix-lot dog) who was adopted from a student of mine, and now a blonde shih tzu who just arrived at her new home in Austin with a lovely girl named Leia. That's not including the one that I found twice whose owner came to get him. That's a dog or cat every 4 months and isnt including Carmen, LillyPlease people, spay and neuter your animals AND get them micro-chipped!

I need something NEW to do:

I am hereby announcing a NEW set of "to do" when I enter the often stuck door of my home. Currently, I enter, make dog dinners and well, watch TV. I love TV and especially all of the CSIs, SVUs, and sundry Law and Orders that are on ALL THE TIME. I have reasons why TV is a great escape, and perhaps I can even make it sound that TV is deserved, but it is causing me to not play in other ways. With the current routine, I am blatantly missing two other things I love, music, and books! So make it known, I am know going to be reading a book of my choosing each night AND will be trying to not turn on the TV for over 2 hours a day, any day. That doesn't seem too hard, does it? In addition, I will be listening to my stereo more and starting the ukulele again (I think the clarinet might just be too much!). So, for the last few nights I have been reading my first book of he new goal-set. It is called Confederacy of Dunces and is by John Kennedy Toole. Ill let you know how it goes, but so far, I think it is comedic, zaney, and superbly mad!

Food Breakdown

I had a HUGE food breakdown today. I ate, and ate, and ate and for some reason, still could eat. What is that about? Today I met the girls at Chili's wherein I ordered some Chicken Enchilada Soup (Thick, yummy, and filling) and a salad with blue cheese. I ate it all and ordered another bowl. 3 mugs of diet coke. Then, I promptly felt so full I was sick. Went to work and ate a milky way bar. Still sick. Then taught 2 classes and stopped for a Reeses PBCup blizzard, from which I ate on the way home. Then, I felt like I didnt want to cook so before I got home I stopped at Jack in the Box and ordered a chicken sandwich meal. I ate it all. And now, I could do with another blizzard. What is wrong with me? How does one go to the gym the next day and work it off? Holy Hell! What is happening to me! My skinnier body is revolting! Is it stress? Is it my period? Do I have a new eating disorder? Ahhhhh!

Meeting the Divine: The Reprive

January 29th
Jody was coming to Vegas late in the evening so I arrived, headed to the Bette Store and walked around Caesar's Palace while the room was readied. Then, upon entering the massive, Bellagio fountain view room, I took a bath in the jacuzzi and wrote in my journal. The suite was huge and gorgeous, complete with a glittering view and multiple seating areas. By the time Jody arrived I was rested and calm. We headed to dinner at Noodles 9, a place that hand makes their noodles. It was not only yummy, but the decor was like being under the sea and goldfish, hundred of them floated through the walls. By midnight we were headed out to Freemont Street for a fried Twinkie and Oreos. The casino housing such a heart attack was called Mermaids and was totally trashy. I loved it. The fried foods shuts down at midnight and it was about 1am, but after some sweet talking by yours truly, we got a couple made special for us. They were scrumptious, I tell you. I could crave one right now! Kathy Griffin and Bette were right!

January 30th
I woke up before Jody and went downstairs to hang out, people watch, and write postcards. About 10am, I crashed her sleep with coffee, yogurt and muffins. She was happy. We chatted and watched the fountains from the window. Then we headed to work out at the fancy center for which people go completely dressed in fabulousity and makeup. I, on the other hand, looked tired and was sweating. Im not sure sweating is a part of that workout center. Then, we spent the next 4 hours at the Qua Baths and Spa.This was a beautiful area with whirlpools and saunas, cool pools, and a room that snows! A bit out of place, we pretended we belonged and enjoyed our soaks like the non-famous pretending to be famous we were. After all day in the water, we went back to the room to ready for dinner and the Bette show. Both were fantastic. We ate at Treve, an Italian eatery in the Forum Shops of Caesar's and made it to Bette's show in perfect time. The Showgirl went on and I left Jody to go meet the Divine Miss M one more time. This time, there were tons of people down int he catacombs of the Colosseum. Not near as intimate as last time, but still exhilarating. The meeting with Bette went so fast, yet was complete with so much eye contact and general coolness.

You know, it is amazing to get to meet someone like Bette one time, but twice is simply divine. I mean, because there is protocol to meet a celebrity--you must fit in their time frame because essentially a non-famous person is an interloper from the larger world of the un-famous. When one meets their sought after famous person, it is as if they have been plucked from their dream. Swirling questions remind one of their helplessness and connection to the world of the not-so-fabulous. "What am I going to say?" repeats like the millions of records the celebrity has recorded and one's heart beats so hard that the room seems to pulse in time. Yet, the instant Bette spoke to me, she became mine. Her eye contact is so intense, the 200 people in the room faded away and I had her for 2 minutes. Standing transfixed, I was instantly grateful to be there again, star-struck, and once again, unable to say what I wanted to clearly, with humor and poise. It's Bette Midler after all! She made eye contact with me several times before it was my turn. I think her brain was telling her she had seen me before and when I moved to shake her hand, she made the point to ask, "Have I met you before?" She remembered me, my dissertation, and that I was a teacher. She was confused how a teacher would gain access twice: I guess we aren't famous enough (funny how I am famous in my own world and I can't imagine my world going on without me in it!). Still, I explained my prize winning and the READ poster left in my car. She laughed and said, "the important thing is to get kids to read, read, read," that it,"was the passage to everything in the world." She made me want to read a book right then, to head back over to the waiting couch and curl up. She instantaneously made me re-access my TV watching habits. She asked me where I was from again, citing that her long-term memory wasn't what it used to be. I said Austin and she said she was surprised kids would struggle there because it was such a progressive city and that she wanted to visit. I replied that there are always kids in need, schools in need, and areas in need. She said she guessed that was right. I ended by saying that the most important part of reading, of my job, was to get people to see that there is so much more out there than what they see everyday. She thought that was, "Yes, very true." I told her thank you for taking time to see me again and she said," Sure." I left pondering my TV watching time and my use of eye contact. I'm going to work on both.

January 31st
Jody and I ate at Serendipity, complete with Frozen Hot Chocolate and a Brie, apple turkey sandwich. So yummy. Then we headed out to the Springs Preserve to take a look at eco-friendly, sustainable living in the desert areas. It was beautiful in a dry, cactusy sort of way. The buildings were amazing as well. After picking up a wine for the woman who made my trip possible, we headed back to get ready for the dinner with the other BetteHeads (those Bette addicted people who read and write on a blog entitled bootlegbetty). It was neat to meet those electronic names and add realtime faces. We laughed and ate. Bette's Harlettes (three background dancers and singers) showed up for a surprise which capped a lovely time. Then, I got the best gift ever from Jody. She gave me a ticket to go see Bette at the last show! I was so excited and bubbly and downright happy I couldnt speak. I ran to the lines and left Jody standing there. She texted me that I was "hilarious and loved." I love that girl. The show was vastly different, resplendent with celebrities (Marie Osmond, Bruce Villanch, Joan Collins, Paula Abdul, Wayne Newton, Carol Bayer Seger, Jerry and Bonnie Bruckheimer, Gladys Knight, Jake Shimabukuro, and even a video of Celine Dion). Wayne was 2 rows behind me and Paula a couple in front. I saw them all with mine eyes! Bette stood teary often and a couple times was unable to finish the song. It was touching, human, and seriously amazing. When Gladys Knight sang Memories Bette sat quiet and in tears and when Bette and Jake sang In My Life, I cried soft tears as well. I will never forget it, ya know?

By the time I got upstairs, I was so exhausted. Jody and I drank some stolen wine and chocolate-covered strawberries and fell asleep, me dreaming of Bette and hearing, "There are places I remember, all my life..." I miss you too Grandpa.

Things I'm Good At

I was reading the New York Times last weekend when an article got me thinking about the difference between /good/ and /great/. The author was proposing that we often think the things that we are good at are actually the things that we are great at. I sat in my currently positive reflectionary state and attempted to make a list of things that I am good at. I realized something. The author is right! The things I wrote down were things that most likely, I am great at (better than most, the top 25% of the population). I should be good at more things than I am great, but I didn't even think about things that I would just be good at. For example, the first thing on my list was "working with children." Now, I am not just good at that, I am great. I love them, I can teach them, and they have a strange, yet lovely attraction to being with me. I am better than good. So, what follows is my list, a list of the things that I should be proud about doing well:

1. Working with children
2. Playing with dogs
3. Taking pictures
4. Buying gifts that are meaningful for others
5. Reading
6. Figuring out how long something will take
7. Making students think differently about school
8. Decorating without money
9. Being generous

Interestingly, I had a huge list of things I don't do well! Boy, this be positive, affirming way of being is hard!

Other than Bette, what did I do in Vegas?

First of all, I had such fun. I arrived on the afternoon of the 9th and Jackie was already drinking a beer and playing slots. I called her while standing next to a giant gold MGM Lion statue which made me look so teeny! She meandered her way to get me and we went to the room, dropped off my stuff, and headed to get tickets for Jubilee!. Jubilee! is the longest running Vegas Showgirl show on the strip. Jackie got us a wonderful military discount which cut the tickets in half so, it was going to be great seats! We walked around, ate, and sat at Napoleon's bar in Paris listening to a fairly good piano player/singer. We chatted and waited for the show. So nice, laid back, and all around good. I was a bit tense as the next day I was meeting Bette! Jubilee! was fantastic. I was surprised it was so good because the stage was seemingly small and the curtains old. It felt very old school Vegas. But, WOW! The costumes were feathers and sequins, huge headpieces and tiny sparkle bras and panties. They sang and walked and danced. The Titanic sank and showgirls burlesqued. It was a jumble of gorgeous scenes well worth the time and money. Each costume was markedly grand and different than the next. Stairs came up, bridges moved, lights shone. After the show we were both so tired and we headed home to meet Jackie's sister, Laura, and sleep. After a quick bite at Nathan's Hotdogs, we all slept the sleep of the dead.

On the 10th we had 10am tickets to the CSI Experience which was in out hotel. You know me, I love me some CSI! Jackie had set it all up so it was early and we were first to go through making it calming and empty, which was so nice. When you enter the place, you get a clip board, are briefed on your mission, and proceed to the crime scene. Ours was a woman who was found behind a dumpster of the MGM. So fun! We looked at DNA, saw an autopsy via a projector and white manikin, and compared drug samples and fly larvae. It was cool. I was certified and completed my case with all A's! Hee hee! After CSI, we went on a walk around Vegas, having frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity, which is the most amazing thing I have ever tasted, seeing the fountains of Bellagio which are choreographed to music and shopping some. We also headed to the Sahara Hotel and Casino which is far, far down the strip. We walked and chatted, also stopping for a hotdog at Circus,Circus. You know me, I was afraid of the clown, but the hot dog rocked and was only $1.99 with a drink and chips. At the Sahara I drove a Nascar and came in 3rd place, which was cool, especially cause other than Laura, everyone driving were men. I topped out at 153mph! After my death-defying drive, Laura and Jackie sent me on the monorail to the hotel to get ready for Bette. You know it was going to take me awhile. They both headed to pick up the tickets for their show and Beatles Love which we were seeing the following night. They were latish in returning so I headed out to walk to Caesar's. We would meet up after the show (see Bette post). Then BETTE and some drinking and playing and bed. I, of course, couldn't sleep and was a bit draggy the next day. On the 11th we went to the gardens of Bellagio and ate wonderful expensive food at Nob Hill. We drank and laughed and ate all day while walking through gloriosly huge hotels and fun casinos. I got to see the volcano erupt at the Mirage and a pirate battle at Treasure Island. I walked 26,000 steps that day, down and up and across and through. Vegas walking is like playing Tetris. Laura and Jackie mostly rose the monorail. That night we went to see The Beatles Love. Can I just say, "Wow!" It is a must for any Beatles fan. The music is fabulous, the costumes quirky and the staging amazing. Check out the link because you can see costumes and the like. It is a good site to explore the show a bit. After being utterly breathless, We all headed to the Rio Casino to take a free shuttle to the Palms to hear the Fat City Horns play. They are Bette's horn section. While they ended up not playing that night (even though their site said they were supposed to), we had fun playing slots (I actually won $40 on the penny slots) and blackjack (I lost my investment of $20). Back to the hotel and sleep, glorious sleep. Even I took the monorail to our room at the MGM.

This Vegas trip was wonderfully laid back and greatly fun. Thanks Jackie and Laura!

I am one Lucky Diva!

I won a package to go see Bette Midler (again) and stay at Caesar's Palace and visit the Qua Baths and Pools. Plus, I was just informed that they are working on "something special."Something special is never bad! I am so excited. It has been a long, long time since I was superfluously, joyfully, exuberant! I am trying not to feel embarrassed and overindulgent, because those are the two emotions that come near to happy-and they shouldn't! Plus, check out my monthly horoscope: It is real. You can check yours (or check the authenticity of mine) by going to Susan Miller's site. Oh yes, and don't forget: I was born October 2nd! It reads:

"By the full moon, January 30, a weekend, you are likely to be rubbing shoulders with many friendly people and you seem to have an event you are eager to attend. This full moon will be in the pampering sign of Leo, so whatever you do will have a dash of luxury or refinement about it. Leo rules entertainment too, so whatever it is on your agenda, you seem to love what's on the "program." This would include a wedding, birthday party, or other celebratory event - it would be fun!

If you were born on or within days of October 3 (yes, that birthday again!) you will give this weekend quadruple gold stars."

AMAZING!
